The town of Merkel is in Taylor County, TX. Located 17 miles to the west of Abilene close to the interstate highway, Merkel is a part of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is spread over 2 square miles and according to the census of 2010; it is home to 2,590 residents. The town was named Windmill Town in the early 1870s, around the time the Texas and Pacific Railway was built.
The name of the town was changed in 1881. The town was renamed after the first person who settled here, S. M. Merkel. Churches, schools, farms and ranches gave the town its character. In 1906, the town became and incorporated city. The Noodle Dome Oil Field and Taylor Electric Co-Op have been serving Merkel and the surrounding areas for decades and adding to the vibrant economy of the city.
The Merkel Independent School District operates public educational institutions in the town. The Merkel Public Library serves to encourage interest in knowledge and education. With over nine thousand items including book, videos and audio material as well as computers and public internet access, the library offers lifelong learning facilities to the residents of Merkel. It offers many activities like summer reading program for children.
Parks like MellingerPark, Windmill RV Park and Windmill Game Ranch offer many productive and fun outdoor activities, like camping, walking, hiking, swimming, gaming, hunting, etc. Merkel Medical Clinic sponsored by Abilene Regional Hospital is helping keep the active community of Merkel healthy.
